Florentine Foodies

How Do You Say; Florentine Foodies in Italian?

Our school in Italy does not have a meal plan included for the sole purpose that exploring the food culture in Italy is half of the fun.

In the land of pasta, pizza, cured meats, gelato, and tiramisu - what are we to do , but slowly discover the best & most authentic hole in the wall type food around every corner? After a short amount of time we were able to create a list of our favorite go-to places for each type of food.

IF you ever find yourself in Florence, you will have to eat at these places and order another plate in honor of me!

All' Antico Vinaio - "the summer" - prosciutto, mozzarella, basil, & tomatoes.

  • Perfect for lunch

  • Price: $

  • Antico has this amazing flatbread baked in olive oil. They slice a large piece in half and stack meat, cheese, sauce and basil with a piece of paper holding it all together. Antico is so popular that they have opened 3 of their own shop front across the street from each other. You pick whichever line you feel is moving the fastest. Then you are rushed into this euphoric experience of italians yelling, meat being thrown, quick slabs of mozz are spread, and fresh tomatoes are sliced. Within minutes you have a panini as large as your head in your hands and you are again rushed out the door. Any curb of the street is an open seat.

a MUST is the truffle sauce - Za Za

  • Perfect for dinner

  • Price: $$

  • Za Za is packed from 7pm and after on any weekend night. It is best to make reservations online to be sure you’ll get a seat. The menu is a dozen pages long with a wine list the same length. The atmosphere is warm, dark, and cozy. A truffle sauce can always been found on the menu. Za Za’s is a must for a dinner out.

rich enough to share - Rivoire

  • Perfect for Dessert

  • Price: $$

  • Rivoire is not only one my great friend’s last name, but the restaurant has a prime spot in the main square opposite the “fake David” sculpture. Be sure to grab the tiramisu and a front row seat outside to the best people watching in town.

  • Perfect for a large group

  • Price: $$

  • Mercato Centrale is right by the leather market. After shopping through the leather jacket and purses you will find a large building that looks like a old train station or market. On the first floor there is a classic market full of fruits, meats, and cheeses. This is some of the best food shopping in town. The second floor is similar to a mall food court but only 10x better than fast food. They have so many choices from dumplings, sushi, pizza fried rabbit, and even vegan burgers. This is the best option for a big group of people. Each person is able to pick their favorite and you can all grab a seat together in the middle! The best part is the second floor is open until 11pm, so it is perfect for a late night bite.

the first floor of Mercato Centrale (it closes at 2 pm)

they call dumplings "ravioli" here - mercato centrale

pizza from mercato centrale

fried cauliflower from mercato centrale

It only took us a couple of weeks to find our favorite places. They are our go-to’s when our friends ask where we should go on a Friday night. After 4 months of being in Florence, our list of favorites will only grow!
